Welcome to Vital Truth Ministries! Welcome to the most boring website ever—full of long articles and essays, and no pictures! (well, we don’t have enough money for a really cool website design!) Instead, we exist to help folks dig down into what they believe about Jesus Christ…and why they believe it. So, we’re not actually boring if you want to unearth some biblical treasure!
My name is Mike Shockey, and I’m a teaching pastor at Hillside Community Church, in Tallahassee, FL (thehillside.church). What you’ll read, for the most part, are many of my Masters of Divinity essays, written for my current work at Reformed Theological Seminary. I have also recently begun to post my sermons, which will give you insight as to what our new church plant is learning on any given Sunday (the kinds of things we think the Bible says every church should know). As well, I periodically post others’ messages and articles, if they’re particularly stimulating to the mind and Spirit of Christ in us. Finally, if you happen across varying chapters of “The Hill and the Ditch,” with characters such as “Reisende” (traveler), and “Llewhaare” (Substitute/Sacrifice), just know you’re reading my first attempts at semi-allegorical, Christian-journey-ish story-telling, one chapter (episode) at a time! Who knows, perhaps you’ll even find a bit of your own journey in those chapters!
We believe that the Christian world, in general—especially in Western Culture—is largely unaware of many vital truths found in Scripture. And if Scripture is God’s primary means by which to reveal Himself to people, then people need to know Scripture. But, of course, that takes time and discipline to sit, read, and meditate over that reading. That’s where we come in. Now, we can’t make you read, of course, but our prayer is, that when you take the time, you’ll be glad of it. Our great hope is that you find, in these pages, the Christ of Scripture, a passion to engage the Bible, and that you’ll believe and trust in Jesus Christ alone, for your eternal happiness. If you’re already a believer, then may our Lord bless you, that you would be strongly encouraged in your faith, in your struggles to see sin overcome in your life, and your desperation to continually have Christ, our King, near you, in wonderful friendship.
Life, both now and eternal, simply doesn’t get better than that.
Enjoy your journey with us! For,
